SPoT - Satellite Personal Tracker is the ultimate survival tool, more useful than an EPIRB.
NB: SPoT requires an annual subscription of USD$115.00 - nothing compared to a life.
SPoT measures a mere 111mm x 70mm x 45mm, weighs 209 grams. Batteries will last approx 1 year turned on unused and approx 14 days using SPoT Casting. SPoT floats and is water proof to 1 meter for 30 minutes.
Spot provides 4 essential functions:
I'm Ok - Txts or emails your choosen contacts that you are Ok. Maybe you're running late or having to much fun, rather than loved ones worry or start a search and rescue, one push of the button lets them know you’re Ok and where you are. Txts have GPS co-ordinates, emails have a Google Maps link.
Non Emergency I Want Help - If you've been out all day and things aren't going right, but there is no immediate danger you can notify you choosen contacts that you want assistance. Txts have GPS co-ordinates, emails have a Google Maps link.
911 - You'll have to twink the number to 111. Sends an alert to the International Emergency Rescue Centre who qualify the event and pass it with the unit identification and location direct to the New Zealand Rescue Coordination Centre in Wellington.
SPoT Casting - An extra $49.99 per year. When activated SPoT will automatically send your location to your choosen contacts every 10 minutes for 24 hours. Your contacts can then track your movements on the FindMeSpot web site.

SPoT uses satellites for communication and will work anywhere there is satellite coverage which includes all New Zealand land and coastal areas. If you're in dense bush or caving you may need to move to somewhere with satellite coverage, the same as with an EPIRB.
